Florian Fricke learned to play the piano at the age of seven and partecipated in his first public music competition with a programme consisting of Haydn, Mozart and Bach when he was 13. Aged 15 he left his grammar school to study the piano, at first with Rudolph Hindemith, Paul Hindemith's brother, and later at the Freiburg College of Music with Professor Picht-Achsenfeld (piano and composition). He left the college at 19 "to live life". Made his first short film, "Pilgerfahrt", at 21. Met Werner Herzog in Munich. And played a young pianist in Herzog's first feature film, "Lebenszeichen", in 1967. Years later, in 1991, he played the blind pianist in Herzog's "Kaspar Hauser".Worked as a music and film critic for "Suddeutsche Zeitung", "Der Spiegel", and "Zurcher Zeitung" for a few years. He got married in Munich in 1968. Florian Fricke founded Popol Vuh together with Holger Trulzsch and Frank Fiedler in 1970 and produced his first album, "Affenstunde". 23 albums recorded by alternating line-ups, several film soundtrack for Werner Herzog and three of his own music video productions (Kailash, 1994 - Sei stille wisse ich bin, 1996 - Messa di Orfeo, 1999) followed. His extensive travels took him to Greece, Mount Sinai, Morocco, the Middle East and the Himalayas. Tibet was particulary dear to him. Together with Popol Vuh colleague and cameramen Frank Fiedler, he created Messa di Orfeo in 1998, a scenic audio-visual installation for the TimeZone Festival in Molfetta and the summer festival in Bari (both Italy). Alongside his musical oeuvre, Florian Fricke developes his own voice therapy for singers, which he called "The Alphabet of the Body". Fricke died in Munich on December 29, 2001.
