Profile:
Frank Zappa (born Frank Vincent Zappa) was a guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, conductor and record producer. Zappa was perpetually poised between rock, jazz, classical music, theater of the absurd and the most advanced music research. He was one of the greatest composers of fusion and jazz-rock music of all times. He was a self-taught musician, with a great creativity (his discography is considerable, expanded after his death by the posthumous album produced by Zappa Family Trust), professionalism and preparation, and with a friendly and funny eagerness to be protagonist. Throughout his career he was haunted by the difficulty of execution of his songs, asking the best from his musicians, in fact he called himself "a guy who writes music which is not able to perform". About this, there is a famous anecdote concerning the song "The Black Page", written especially for Terry Bozzio, in Zappa's opinion, the only guy able to play it (because of its extreme rhythmic complexity represented by a "black page" of notes). Later, Bozzio was replaced by Vinnie Colaiuta, who played it by heart during the hearing. The great musical legacy Frank Zappa left us is represented by his compositions, complex and refined, his infinite instrumental experimentation, and his guitar technique.
