Born Gary Francis Caine Cherone, he is an American hard rock singer-songwriter. He is best known as founder and lead vocalist of the hard rock heavy metal funk band Extreme. He also has a solo career and was the lead singer for Van Halen (1996-1999), performing on the Van Halen III album and subsequent tour .
