Profile:
Herbert Jeffrey "Herbie" Hancock achieved his first contract in the early sixties with the label Blue Note and his first solo album is "Takin 'Off" (1962). In May 1963, Miles Davis called him for the album "Seven Steps to Heaven", so Hancock joined the historic Davis quintet, where he will also meet Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams and Ron Carter. in meantime, Hancock continued working for the label Blue Note. In 1968, Hancock left the Davis quintet and recorded "Fat Albert Rotunda," his first album markedly funky. In 1969 he formed a sextet, with which he released several works and, from the same year, he became interested in electronic instruments. This period will continue until the eighties, when Hancock pursues two parallel musical projects, one oriented to the disco and electronic music and the other close to 'hard-bop. Even the nineties are rich of collaborations and projects. In February 2008, the album "River: The Joni Letters", dedicated to his friend songwriter Joni Mitchell, won the Grammy Award for best album of 2007. This Grammy joins the others, which Hancock began to win for his work since 1983.
