Ian McDonald with Robert Fripp, Greg Lake, Michael Giles and Peter Sinfield, founded the King Crimson in 1968. In 1969 Ian McDonald with Michael Giles left the King Crimson and recorded an album called "McDonald & Giles". In 1974 McDonald worked again with King Crimson as a guest appearance on "Red". In 1976 he founded the Foreigner with whom had a great commercial success.
