February 23 1980: debut single 'Running Free', is released, reaching No. 34 in U.K. charts. Iron Maiden play totally live on Top Of The Pops, first live band since The Who, in 1972.

Iron Maiden were formed by bassist Steve Harris, shortly after he left his previous group, Smiler. Harris attributes the band name to a movie adaptation of The Man in the Iron Mask from the novel by Alexandre Dumas, which he saw around that time.
