The music lover journey across Italy, its regions and its live events, that MusicAdvisor suggested you for this summer 2011 (please, see the ALL NEWS section for the complete journey) has come to an end with the south Italy description in the previous news. But we at MusicAdvisor want to provide you with the most complete information. While writing our guide, more dates, happenings and events were created and confirmed in every Italian region for this summer 2011, and we want to let you know and also give you tips and suggestions on hidden jewels and places that could well surprise you for their beauty and their live music offer. Again from north to south, from east to west, all across Italy.
Recently declared by Unesco as World Heritage property, Italian Dolmites are unique mountains, known and admired all over the world. While visiting these fantastic places this summer, you could chance on two pleasant events. "Südtirol Jazz Festival Alto Adige", held in Bolzano, the capital of Sud Tirol, but also in real gems nestled in the Dolomites like Merano, Bressanone, Brunico, Vipiteno, from 24 June to 3 July. Many free events in all these towns with Italian and international artists that will create a "jazzy" atmosphere, quite unusual for these places. And quite unusual but perfectly located too, is the "SanVito Blues&Soul Festival", held in San Vito di Cadore (next to the worldwide famous Cortina D'Ampezzo) every July: also in this case all villages in the nearby are involved, this year from 1 to 9 July, Italian (Antonio Rigo Blues Band, Tolo Marton among the others) and international (Brian Templeton, Arthur Miles among the others) blues bands and artists will hit the stages of all eastern Cadore, San Vito, Cibiana, Borca, Vodo. Don't miss at least one evening there, if you are in the Dolomites, their slogan is "Music & Tipical Food".
In Codroipo, next to Udine in Friuli region, not very far from Venice, there is a stunning Villa Veneta, that was the dwelling of the last Venetian Doge Ludovico Manin at the end of the 18th century. In recent years it has become a fantastic venue for events, exhibitions and concerts. For summer 2011 the main live events will be Zucchero (7 July) and Limp Bizkit (12 July), one of the most awaited live comeback. And in Codroipo there is also the "Summer Music Fest" (usually from middle of July until middle of August, in Lonca locality): this year we have a band confirmed at moment for 7 August, the kings of grindcore, Napalm Death!!! In July there is also the "Grado Festival" in Grado, Adriatic sea resort in Friuli region, one of the main international events for this summer will see on stage Ray Manzarek & Robbie Krieger from The Doors on 10 July. From 20 July to 6 August in the beautiful village of Sesto Al Reghena, the "Sexto Unplugged" 2011 edition will host among the others the (Italo) English Anna Calvi, Tim Burgess and Mark Collins of The Charlatans, the French Nouvelle Vague, the German Get Well Soon, the Irish Divine Comedy, the American Scott Matthew, the Danish Agnes Obel. We leave Friuli region for Venice now, again in Parco San Giuliano (see the previous North-East Italy news), this time for one of the biggest electronic festival of this Italian summer 2011. "Electro Venice Festival" on 18 June will see the best DJs from all over the world and as headliner Fatboy Slim. A great "elctroweekend" in Venice! Marostica is an enchanting little town in Veneto region, Vicenza province, surrounded by medioeval walls, mostly famous for its living chess event. And in its central "chess square" Mario Biondi, woldwide appreciated Italian soul singer, will perform an unique event on the evening of 2 July. If you love to dance at the rhythm of the best disco music of recent years, before leaving North-East Italy, don't forget to take a trip to Jesolo, famous seaside location next to Venice: on 31 July David Guetta will set afire the "Il Muretto" shore for what really promises to be an endless dancing cocktail evening on the shore. Other important confirmed dates in Veneto are Ricky Martin with his "Musica Alma Sexo World Tour" at Arena di Verona (4 July) and the return of Duran Duran in Piazzola Sul Brenta (22 July).
As concerns North-West Italy, we already wrote (see the previous North-West Italy news) that Milan and its surroundings have always been the best in Italy for live music offer. Summer 2011 confirms this and many more dates and events were added, in the meantime, to an already incredible live music calendar (see previous North-West Italy news for the complete guide). We would like to report following new dates and festivals: "Carroponte" festival will last all summer 2011 from May to September. It is held in Sesto San Giovanni, Milan north oustskirt and among its main events there are the eclectical jazz/rock/progressive Italian band Quintorigo (7 June), the return of the seminal hardcore/funk/crossover American band Bad Brains (20 June) and the American punk rock heroes NOFX (16 August). Other confirmed acts at Carroponte festival will be Caparezza, Africa Unite, Tonino Carotone, Fabri Fibra, Persiana Jones, Bobo Rondelli, 99 Posse, Calibro 35, Bandabardò. Another venue that will be very active during this summer is the Circolo Magnolia in Segrate (Milan north east oustskirt): its confirmed events are "Grazie a Dio è Lunedì" ("Thank God it's Monday"), an evening with Dinosaur Jr. supported by many good Italian alternative rock bands (4 July), the "MIODI Festival" with some great underground extreme metal bands from all over the world such as Eyehategod, Boris, Kylesa, Church Of Misery, Russian Circles, The Secret and many others (5 July), the underground alternative rock icon American band Cake in its only date in Italy (6 July), Gogol Bordello (7 July), Italian electro dance heroes Planet Funk (12 July). We already talked about "Flippaut Dance Reload Festival" in Milan (see the previous North-West Italy news), but this festival will actually split in 2 and on 12 July at the Arena Concerti of Rho Exhibition there will be the "Alternative Reload Festival" with at the moment confirmed acts The Stokes, Chromeo, Verdena, Glasvegas. The program of "Milano Jazzin Festival" (see the previous North-West Italy news for full program) has been completed with more bands and artists added to an already amazing calendar: Ringo Starr and the All Starr Band (3 July), Chicago (10 July), Cyndi Lauper (13 July), Vinicio Capossela (16 July), Erykah Badu (21 July), Moby (22 July), Duran Duran (23 July), Subsonica (26 July). Other dates not to be missed in Milan: Jello Biafra (frontman of the glorious Dead Kennedys) at Leoncavallo (22 June), Dio Disciples (the all star band with ex members of the DIO band that will perform R.J. Dio songs) + Anvil at Magazzini Generali (29 June), Roger Waters - The Wall on 3 and 4 July at Forum Assago. Still in Lombardy region we find the "Summer Sound Festival" located in the Arena Fiera, in the beatiful city of Bergamo from 7 to 12 July; at the moment confirmed acts are Subsonica, Modà, Asian Dub Foundation.
Let's head south to the splendid region of Liguria, with Genoa, Riviera delle Palme, La Spezia, the Gulf of Poets, the Cinque Terre, Rapallo, Portofino... recently some great live music events have been scheduled. The "Genova Guitar Festival" in July will see on the stage of the Arena Del Mare great performers such as Lee Ritenour & Dave Grusin (3 July), Warren Haynes Band (11 July), Robben Ford & Band (13 July), Alvin Lee band (16 July), Hot Tuna Electric band + Bruce Cockburn (17 July). The "Just like a woman", all female festival, will take place in July at Porto Antico of Genoa. Its main events will be Bettye Lavette (6 July), Cassandra Wilson (20 July), Marianne Faithfull (26 July). The "Metal Valley Open Air 2011" festival, held on 10 July in Rossiglione (next to Genoa) will be a pleasure for every heavy metal fan: Deicide, Belphegor, Strana Officina, Skanners, Hour Of Penance, Elvenking, The Amenta and many others. And if you are there at the end of July, don't miss at Cittadella Firmafede in Sarzana town the solo concert of Steve Lukather (guitarist of Toto) on 28 July.
Emilia-Romagna now, with a great comeback of one of the protagonists of the street glam metal sceneof the eighties: the re-united Cinderella will hit the stage of Estragon venue in Bologna on 13 June for their 25th Anniversary Tour!!! In Ferrara a great date for all alternative rock fans has been added in the enchanting central Piazza Castello: Dinosaur Jr. + Verdena on 3 July.
In Marche region in the city of Ancona from 18 to 30 June, the "Spilla Festival" (most events are as free entrance) will see among the others Anna Calvi, Divine Comedy (A night with Neil Hannon), Is Tropical.
In Tuscany more events have been confirmed to complete an already unprecedented live music offer for this region. In Florence, one of the best alternative rock bands will start their Italian summer tour: Alter Bridge at Viper Club (22 June). In the fascinating Tuscany capital there will also be a jazz summer festival for all the genre lovers: "Vivere Jazz Festival" at the Teatro Romano in the breathtaking hill of Fiesole will host among the others Rota Project, Raphael Gualazzi, Cassandra Wilson, Grupo Compay Segundo, Living Coltrane, Charles Lloyd new quartet, all from 11 to 23 July. In Marina di Pietrasanta, Lucca province, on the Tirreno seaside, the "La Versiliana Festival" will take place from 20 July to 18 August: among the confirmed band and artists, Goran Bregovic and Wedding and Funeral Band, Daniele Silvestri, Igudesman & Joo, Ornella Vanoni, Roberto Vecchioni. At the Arena Mario Incisa della Rocchetta in Bolgheri, Livorno province, "Bolgheri Melody" festival from 9 July to 7 August: among the main events, the unrivalled Brian Ferry (28 July) and Tuscan female rock icon Gianna Nannini (30 July).
Umbria region will host on 3 and 4 September what is really a hidden jewel as concerns the location and the music genre: the "Villa Festival" in Monte Del Lago, beautiful little village on the Lake Trasimeno shores is a dark, obscure, esoteric meeting that will surely entrance you in its atmosphere. Sol Invictus, Rose Rovine, Andrew King, Sieben, Seventh Harmonic are the "obscure" names of some of the bands involved in this 2 days event on the shore of a magic lake!!!
If you're visiting Sardinia at the end of June and you are a metal hardcore passionate, you'll definitely want to go to the village of Thiesi (north west on the island) were the "Santu Juanne Festival" takes place. Hatebreed in their only Italian date, are confirmed as headliner for the 25 June evening... and it's free!!!
In the last hours George Michael has confirmed his brand new "Symphonica- The European Orchestral Tour" that will bring him to Italy for 3 unmissable dates that will ideally close this great, everlasting Italian live music summer: 10 September in Florence, Piazza Santa Croce, 11 September in Naples, Acciaieria Sonora, 13 September in Verona at the Arena.
In the end of our long long journey across Italy, some more suggestion for live music events (if you had not enough :-). If you want to discover Italian music, bands and artists, what best than doing it when you are in Italy? Some of the most important are extensively on tour this summer 2011, some of them we already reported in previous news, some of them are internationally famous, some of them not yet, but please take note of their names and if you find yourself there... don't miss Vasco Rossi, Zucchero, Litfiba, Ligabue, Gianna Nannini, Elisa, Subsonica, Marlene Kuntz, Jovanotti, Paolo Conte, Caparezza, Franco Battiato, Negramaro, Francesco Guccini, Roberto Vecchioni, Dalla - De Gregori Work in Progress, Mario Biondi, Cesare Cremonini, Fabri Fibra. Many different genres, from rock to rap, from jazz to hip-hop, from dark to folk, from pop to world music, in this way you could have a good picture of what the Italian music lover is listening to.
And a special tip for "Notre-Dame de Paris" a sung-through French-Canadian musical composed by Riccardo Cocciante, one of the most exciting and touching singer/songwriter/artists Italy has ever had. "Notre-Dame de Paris" will celebrate its 10th Anniversary this summer 2011 and the musical will be performed in all the most important cities in Italy. Don't miss it if you want to see and live something different from all your music tastes. This will let you astonished and pleased!!!
