Ok...I made an effort...I tryed to listen Lulu'...nothing...I can't do it! There's only one song 'listenable' (I forgot the title), all the other tracks have nothing to do with music! My opinion about this work is extremely negative, and I'm sorry because I love the music by Metallica and I'm a great fan of Lou Reed (who likes experiments but this is too much!).

I Listened more than one time for this work and I make it with a big curiosity, it's a difficult and questionable album, also boring sometimes. I understood all critics, and partially I share them, but I have to say to be fully agree with ludo10 when he said (on previous review) 'I don't know for what reason, I'm beginning to like the tedious and endless lament That characterizes all this album.'

OK, I made the effort, I gave it some more listenings and now I'm ready to partially change my initial opinion. Starting from the point that the voice and spoken of Lou Reed and also the rare singing of Hetfield are annoying and unbearable through most of the album, my rates on each song are: Brandenburg Gate 3.0 (good start), The View 3.0 (the only one that could possibly become a single or be performed as a single song in live appearances, but I hope it won't), Pumping Blood 0.5 (ridiculous, I give half vote because it ends at some point ;-), Mistress Dread 4.0 (maybe the best one with Metallica speeding as in the good times), Iced Honey 1.0 (nothing to remember), Cheat On Me 3.5 (not bad in its legth), Frustration 2.5, Little Dog 0.5 (bah...), Dragon 4.0 (as Lou Reed sings: "allucinations..."), Junior Dad 3.0 (for the calm and peaceful atmosphere after all this). So my final vote should be 2,5, but I don't know for what reason, I'm beginning to like the tedious and endless lament that characterizes all this work. So at the moment it is a 3,5!!!

Ok let's put it like this. It is an EXPERIMENT: everyone that loves Lou Reed knows that he likes to experiment, he started doing "difficult things" from the time of the Velvet Underground on. Lou produced milestones in the rock history but also experimental music which is difficult to understand and even to listen to. Lulu is not as a whole so "difficult" (there are some "normal" and in my opinion good songs, Brandenburg Gate and Frustration for example) but it is not an album to listen thinking about the music of Lou Reed or Metallica. The CHOICE is if we want to "sacrifice" our ears in the name of "open mindness", or if we prefer to listen to the music we best love (and Lulu is not in any case the music we best love). Therefore Lulu is a good experiment for what is meant to be. Let's see as some previous reviews suggested, if there will be a proper tour and a play of Lulu in theatres.

After some listenings, I think to this work like to a rock opera that needs to have a its own space in the listener's mind. Surely it should be showed in a theater with actors, visual and so on, or in other place, but not listened only. 4/5 for rock opera, 1/5 for the music.

I listened to it too this morning... believe me, in general this is unlistenable, unbearable!!! Sorry for that... there are some good "pieces" of music, but 90 minutes of this thing is too much... If it wasn't Lou Reed and Metallica I would have never spent 90 minutes in streaming... maybe I agree with the previous review, this music is not made to be listened on a normal album, maybe in a theatre with a proper concept show it can make sense, but on a CD... you don't want that really... hope there will be someone to enlighten us on the hidden meaning and sense of all this

From today the album is entirely listenable on the official website of Lou Leed and Metallica. I'm a big fan of both, I consider some Lou Reed's album of the 70s as milestones for all the contemporary scene (RNR Animal above all) and all Metallica of the 80s and 90s as the best in heavy metal. Having said that... I don't know what to say about Lulu... maybe is too "complicated" to be understood after the first listen, the feeling I have is that Lou Reed and Metallica just don't match together! But maybe this is also the beauty and the reason for this album!!! Don't know really, I think since this is a soundtrack for a story that Lou Reed adapted to an old German play, maybe the future and success of this project will naturally be with Lou Leed and Metallica performing all this album live in theatres, in a proper show with actors and dancers goin on... Anyway everyone certainly needs to listen to Lulu more than once, I make a prediction: this will be the most discussed album of all time!!!

Lulu: Recorded between April and June 2011 at HQ in San Rafael, CA
Mixed at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles, CA; Lulu is a musical collaboration between Lou Reed and Metallica, based on a concept project by Lou Reed, which has always remained hidden until 2011. Reed had conceived over the years songs inspired by 2 plays (Earth Spirit and Pandora’s Box) written between late 1800 and early 1900 by German expressionist writer Frank Wedekind. The plays tell the story of a young abused dancer’s life. Metallica listened to Lou Reed demos and lyrics and decided to write music with him.
