Merle Robert Travis was a country and western musician who rose to fame in 1946, with his two most famous singles, "Sixteen Tons" and "Dark as a Dungeon". His lyrics often discussed the exploitation of coal miners. Travis in 1970 was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and in 1977 he was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame.
