Profile:
|
On 29 October and 1 November 2006, 44 years after the band formation in 1962, director Martin Scorsese filmed the Rolling Stones performing at New York City's Beacon Theatre, in front of an audience that included Bill and Hillary Clinton. In 2008 the related film "Shine a Light" was released.
By November 2006, the Bigger Bang tour (which lasted 2 years, from 2005 to 2007) had been declared the highest-grossing tour of all time, earning $437 million.
On 23 May 2010, the re-issue of 1972 album Exile on Main St. stormed at No. 1 in the UK charts, 38 years after it first occupied that position. The Rolling Stones are the first band to ever see a classic work return to No. 1 decades after it was first released.
Saying or writing something about the life, career, music of The Rolling Stones, that has not been already said and written is almost impossible.
The above mentioned three recent events can maybe more than any other biographic report, review, or praise, portray what Rolling Stones mean for the whole world of music.
The band's official discography consists of 29 studio albums, 10 live albums, 31 compilation albums, 3 extended plays and 92 singles, all of them (with ups and downs) invariably a commercial and critical success. The Rolling Stones have survived almost 50 years, living and making history from the 1960s till the new millenium, going through fame, success, stardom, drug and alcohol abuses, sexual scandals, debauchery, excess, tragedies, problems with justice and taxes, accuses of sexist, racist, even satanic behavior; all of this accompanied by one big constant in their lives; the best rock and the best blues. They began calling themselves the World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the late '60s; as for The Beatles, rock bands that were and still are influenced by The Rolling Stones are uncountable and everyone still nowadays when thinking about rock, cannot help associating the word with them.
